Sarah Palin and Thai Food

On Sunday we went out to eat with two couples that I've mentioned before here and there. I was very nervous before and probably during. Thing is, even though I feel fine about who I am and what I do, I still am not comfortable socializing with rich folk.

For instance, they talked, quite naturally, of quizzing Warren Buffet on what was going on in the economy and what might happen next (Buffet's words of wisdom were: "heck if I know"). And they talked about Madoff and how they had friends that lost a bunch in that scheme. And they talked about a friend who lost everything except her twenty million dollar condo and how, while she might be able to sell it for half or a quarter of its value, they didn't know how she'd make it. I didn't have much to say, but I didn't mind sitting back and listening. I enjoy that in a group.

They tried to include me but I live in a different world and the attempts fell flat. They asked how Kona was doing in the economy and didn't believe me, or like it, when I said "steady on." Fact is, that's all any of us can do about anything.

One really funny thing, though it probably won't make it in print: One of the guys stood up right as we were leaving and bellowed "Sarah Palin." It was like he had Tourett's Syndrome or something. The restaurant got deathly quiet as everyone stopped to hear what he would say...but nothing else came out. We all paused, half rising to leave, and finally someone said, "okay then, well...there it is." And we left.

Experimenting with Facebook

I've been playing a bit with Facebook. I wasn't interested, at first, in learning a new system...but it snags you and after you connect with people you're stuck. Today I set up a page to share music, art and writing. Here's a link:

Facebook is a bit of a mystery. I lay awake last night trying to understand it. I think there's a clue in realizing that Facebook is made up of two words: Facebo and Ok. I understand the Ok bit, but the Facebo I don't. It's a mystery and I guess that's why Facebook is too.

Anyway, check out the link, I don't know if you have to be a member to view it, but it's easy to sign up and then they'll get you too.
